Don't Die Without a Will or Trust

Posted on Sep 01, 2010

Visit my blog to learn more about a very interesting celebrity estate issue triggered by 3 books near the top of the New York Times Best Seller list.

http://www.habigerelderlaw.com/blog/.

Shortly after Stieg Larsson dropped off his 3 unpublished books to his publisher, he abruptly died....without a will.

On the afternoon of Nov. 9, 2004 - the elevator at his office building wasn't working, and Larsson climbed the seven flights to his office, where he then collapsed with a massive heart attack. According to Kurdo Baksi, his last words were, "I'm 50, for Christ's sake!"

Yes, he was only 50 at the time of his death, and he died with an apparently minimal estate and three unpublished novels.  Larsson's girlfriend of 30 years, Eva Gabrielsson, was left with his physical belongings and no will to establish her rights to anything else.  This vagueness became a substantial problem as the 3 novels became best sellers (over 27 million copies have been sold) that then led to lucrative movie rights.  Although he died in 2004, the issues over his estate are still being contested today.

I didn't advise Stieg Larsson, but his story of leaving his estate plan undefined is too common in this world.  I invite you to read a bit more about this unfolding legal nightmare for Larsson's girlfriend and family members.  If I had advised Larsson, be assured he would likely have died with a very well drafted will.
